The Jim Hayter Memorial Scholarship was established in 2017 to honour the late Jim Hayter, a charter member of the Canadian Volunteer Fire Services Association (CVFSA). Chief Hayter served the Alvinston, Ontario Fire Department for 44 years, including 15 years as Fire Chief. Aside from his incredible dedication to the fire department, he was actively involved in his community, including serving as Deputy Mayor.

His dedication to service and education continues to inspire future generations through this scholarship opportunity. This scholarship honours Chief Hayter’s views on the importance of community involvement and giving back.

Sponsored by Metalfab Fire Trucks of Centreville, NB, this scholarship is awarded annually to one applicant who demonstrates a strong commitment to academics, community involvement, and personal growth.

Eligibility And Application Requirements

The Jim Hayter Memorial Scholarship is open to active firefighters or dependent children of active firefighters who are under the age of 25. Anyone wanting to apply must be currently enrolled or have been accepted at an accredited university or college to pursue a course of study that will lead to a recognized degree. In addition to academic standing, the applicant’s community and school involvement are really important factors in awarding this scholarship.

Applicants must also submit a letter from their Fire Chief confirming their own or their parent’s/guardian’s active membership in a fire department.

This letter, along with the completed application form and other supporting documents, must be submitted by the deadline to be considered.

Scholarship Award And Deadline:

The scholarship award is valued at $1,500 and is granted to one applicant per year. The deadline to apply for the 2025 Jim Hayter Memorial Scholarship is Friday, May 30, 2025. Late applications will not be accepted or reviewed.
