Walk Around Rescues
Walk Around Rescues
Walk-around rescues generally offer about a third more space, on average, as they utilize primarily external storage components for mounting equipment.
However, this often compromises ease of accessibility, and it is advisable to consider a custom model to minimize the risk of injury to your crew when accessing equipment. When designed to meet your department’s specific needs, walk-around rescues can become an invaluable resource for your team.
Walk-around rescues serve the purpose of transporting equipment and manpower to fire scenes. They are commonly referred to as the “mobile toolbox” of the fire department, offering a spacious interior to accommodate a large crew while utilizing external mounts and compartments for equipment storage.
Unlike pumper and tanker units, walk-around rescues are generally not intended for carrying water. However, a custom unit can be designed to include this feature if desired. Additionally, accommodations for ladders and suction hoses can be added as needed. Each walk-around rescue unit is equipped with an automatic transmission, diesel engine, scene lighting systems, tower lights, generators, and a choice between a commercial chassis (Freightliner, International, Kenworth, Peterbilt, Mack, etc.) or a custom chassis (Spartan). You can also select warning light systems from Federal, Whelen, or Code 3, choose between roll-up or flush mount doors, and customize seating, tool-mounting, and SCBA storage options.
Unique Requirements
Exterior compartments are installed on the low, mid, and high sides to provide additional storage capacity.
The body of each Metalfab walk-around rescue is constructed using heavy-duty extruded aluminum. This includes a 3″ x 3″ aluminum tube subframe, a minimum of four spring-loaded hold downs to minimize body stress, a 3/16″ aluminum plate made with 5052 marine-grade aluminum, and proprietary extrusions designed to reinforce the body. Our customization services allow you to work closely with us to tailor each component of the unit to your specific needs.
Since every department varies in manpower levels, equipment types, response areas, and water sources, customization needs differ. With Metalfab, you have the option to customize warning light systems, scene lighting, storage, seating for manpower, various body configurations, and more to best suit the needs of your team.
If you decide that a custom walk-around rescue is the right choice for your department, Metalfab’s sales team will meet with you to discuss your team’s needs. We will collaborate with our engineering staff to design and deliver a unit that your department can proudly call its own.
